A Life in Service — Dr. N.K. Mittal
The Journey

From Purkhas, With Purpose

Where it began · Purkhas, Haryana

Early Life & Motivation

Born into a family of limited means but rich in values, Dr. Mittal studied up to the 8th standard in his village before moving to S.M. Hindu High School and Hindu College, Sonipat. Two teachers shaped him — Shri Deep Chand Garg, who nurtured independent thinking and a sincere work ethic, and Shri V.P. Arya, who taught him to meet stress with calm and dignity. His quiet ambition: to become the first from Purkhas — a village known for sport, not academics — to earn an MBBS and serve humanity.

PGIMS Rohtak

Medical Education & Mentorship

He earned his MBBS and MD in Pediatrics from PGIMS Rohtak, shaped above all by Prof. Usha Dhall — whose discipline and grace became the cornerstone of his confidence — and Prof. P.S. Dhatt, whose ward-round call "Mittal, kithe hai?" still stands in his memory for accountability and pride in patient care.

The Turning Point

A six-month residency took him into the slums of Jahangirpuri, Seelampur, and Nand Nagri, where he saw first-hand the silent suffering of children with tuberculosis. That exposure became the moral spark of his life's work — a resolve to make childhood TB visible, diagnosable, treatable, and preventable.

Sonipat · 1992 onward

Foundations of Service

After rural service in Samargopalpur and training under Dr. S.K. Puri at Civil Hospital, Sonipat, Dr. Mittal and his wife Dr. Deepmala — a President's Medalist — founded Mittal Nursing Home on 7 June 1992. It grew into a respected family-run multi-specialty centre and pioneered Haryana's first private NICU and neonatal ventilation. Many who joined on day one still serve today — a living measure of its culture of loyalty and trust.
