Pediatric TB — Review, Advocacy & Prevention

Writing the Case for a TB-Free Childhood

Beyond clinical case reports, Dr. Mittal has authored a body of review and advocacy writing arguing that childhood tuberculosis — paucibacillary, underdiagnosed, and underreported — is the decisive front in India's TB elimination effort. These articles, published in the official journals of IAP Haryana and IMA Haryana and, most recently, in the International Journal of Science and Research and the International Journal for Multidisciplinary Research, move the conversation from detection to prevention, nutrition and immunisation.

Nutrition as a Missing Link in Childhood TB

Dr. N. K. Mittal

International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR)

Review paper · August 2026 · Vol. 15, Issue 8

Examines how undernutrition raises a child's risk of progressing from TB infection to active disease, and argues for cross-referral between nutrition and TB services at the points where families already meet the health system — rather than running them as separate verticals.

Strengthening Immunisation to Achieve TB Mukt Bharat

Prof. Dr. N. K. Mittal

International Journal for Multidisciplinary Research (IJFMR)

July–August 2026 · Vol. 8, Issue 4 · E-ISSN 2582-2160

Treats BCG vaccination and TB elimination as points on a single continuum of paediatric TB prevention. Proposes adding one household TB-exposure question to routine immunisation counselling, with a simple referral pathway into contact tracing and TPT — a low-cost way to reach children in TB-affected households earlier.

TB Mukt Bharat: A Call to Pediatricians of Haryana

Dr. N. K. Mittal, Dr. Nishant Mittal

Haryana Pedinews — Official Publication of IAP Haryana State

A field-driven call to action positioning the child as the sentinel case whose illness points to an infectious adult in the household — turning every diagnosis into a chance to break the transmission chain. Lays out actionable steps for pediatricians: never miss a suspect, notify every case on NIKSHAY, and “adopt a family, adopt a village.”

Pediatric Tuberculosis: Moving from Detection to Prevention

Dr. N. K. Mittal

Haryana Pedinews — Official Publication of IAP Haryana State

Argues for a paradigm shift from “TB control” to “TB elimination” — replacing passive, hospital-based detection with active case finding, early intervention, and community prevention. Frames children as the “silent seed” of future TB and the key to interrupting the cycle: “We have mastered treatment — now we must master prevention.”

Childhood Tuberculosis: The Forgotten Pillar of TB Elimination in India

Hon. Prof. Dr. N. K. Mittal

Review article

A structured review making the programmatic case for pediatric-sensitive diagnostic thresholds, age-inclusive prevention, nutritional integration, and improved BCG coverage. Argues that low pediatric notification reflects the limits of detection — not true prevalence — and calls for recalibration within the NTEP.

Pediatric Tuberculosis Preventive Therapy: An Essential Strategy for TB Elimination in India

Dr. N. K. Mittal, Dr. Nishant Mittal

Editorial review: Dr. Tarun Yadav, District TB Officer, Sonipat

A practical clinical review of TB preventive therapy under the NTEP — indications, recommended regimens (6H, 3HR, 3HP, 4R) with pediatric dosing, adverse effects, monitoring, and field implementation. Makes the case for extending TPT beyond the under-five paradigm to all eligible household contacts.

A preterm, low-birth-weight neonate presenting critically ill with a calcified abdominal lump was diagnosed with meconium pseudocyst — a rare, potentially lethal complication of in-utero intestinal perforation. Managed conservatively rather than surgically, feeds were successfully established and the child was discharged well — careful case selection in one of neonatology's less common emergencies.
